For more than 40 years, Glenn Hager has dedicated his time to the American Red Cross and to serving others. Glenn first began volunteering with the Red Cross in 1982 as a CPR and first aid instructor before becoming involved in disaster services in 1983. He helped develop and establish disaster services in Missouri and by 1984, became the coordinator for the Jackson County region. Through leadership and negotiation training, Glenn learned how to navigate the challenges of leadership and management within the Red Cross. Outside of his volunteer work, Glenn is also a strong advocate for veterans through his work with the VA and the VFW in Missouri. His own military experience including serving in Vietnam as an Air Force security forces member, has also shaped his approach to service. Glenn additionally owns a computer business where he repairs and builds computers.
Throughout his more than four decades with the Red Cross, Glenn has responded to countless disasters, but one experience stands out above the rest: spending a month in Puerto Rico following a devastating hurricane. He described seeing an entire island affected by the disaster, saying it was as if the country had been “devastated and almost wiped off the face of the earth.” Glenn credits his military experience with helping him handle the difficult conditions and remain focused on completing the mission. Despite the challenges, he continued working to help those affected by the disaster, an experience that remains especially meaningful to him.
After more than 40 years, Glenn continues volunteering because of his commitment to the people around him, particularly other volunteers. “I do it because I want to make sure other volunteers have a good relationship.” he explained. Glenn believes that there is always a solution and wants volunteers to feel welcome and supported. His advice to current volunteers is simple. “Lead by example, and treat people with the same respect that you expect.” For those considering volunteering, Glenn emphasizes that the need extends beyond large natural disasters. “Red Cross needs volunteers, your community needs volunteers.” he said. Whether someone can deploy across the country or simply volunteer locally, Glenn believes every contribution matters because without volunteers the Red Cross cannot provide the support communities need.
