For Chet Kangethe, donating blood started as a simple decision during a lunch break, but it quickly became a lifelong commitment to helping others. 

Encouraged by his employer, Verizon, to find meaningful ways to serve his community, Kangethe decided to visit a blood drive and make his first donation. What began as a one-time act of service left a lasting impression. 

“The experience is always positive,” Kangethe recalls. “Having everybody engaged saves lives and makes a difference in your own community.” 

A year later, that enthusiasm persists. He looks forward to each opportunity to contribute, not only for the comforting, friendly faces and beloved post-donation snacks, but for the knowledge that his blood could make a life-saving difference for someone in need.  

“Blood shortages occur everywhere; the Red Cross has helped people in my family”, Kangethe said. Further, deepening his need to give back to a community that has served him well. 

Kangethe believes one simple truth is often overlooked: blood cannot be manufactured. 

“You can’t buy blood, it can only come from donations,” he says. 

That reality emphasizes the importance of every donor. While a single blood donation can help save multiple lives, the collective impact of thousands of donors working toward the same goal is even more powerful. Kangethe and other donors reflect the mission of the American Red Cross: alleviating human suffering through the generosity of others. 

Blood donation is one of the most direct ways people can support that mission. Every unit donated represents a chance for someone to recover from surgery, survive a traumatic injury, receive cancer treatment, or overcome a serious illness. It is a powerful reminder of what people can do for one another during times of need. 

Today, that need is especially urgent. The nation is facing a critical blood shortage, and while many dedicated donors continue to give, donations have declined. All blood types are needed, but Type O blood, often called the universal blood type for emergencies, is in high demand. Supplies remain limited, making every donation more vital than ever. 

For Kangethe, the decision to donate blood remains simple and essential: it is an opportunity to contribute to something bigger than himself and help save lives. And that is a mission worth supporting, one donation at a time.
