Even before the first storm forms in the Gulf or a hurricane threatens the coast, the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region is already hard at work—ensuring no one has to face a disaster alone.

“At the Red Cross we never stop preparing for disasters because we know they can happen anytime, anywhere,” said Carmen Watkins, Chief Executive Officer for the Texas Gulf Coast Region. “It’s critical that people make their preparations too. Large disasters are occurring almost continuously, and it only takes one to change someone’s life forever.”

Behind-the-Scenes Preparation

Hurricane readiness starts long before a forecast cone appears on the map. The Red Cross focuses on coordinating response plans, preparing volunteers, and ensuring essential resources are in place.

Teams work closely with local government officials and community partners to help make sure that, when disaster strikes, people have access to safe shelter, meals, water, and critical relief supplies. At the same time, volunteers are recruited and trained so they’re ready to step in and support their communities at a moment’s notice. Local response vehicles are checked, and warehouses are stocked to ensure supplies can be quickly deployed wherever they are needed most.

Steps You Can Take Now

Preparedness isn’t just for emergency responders—it’s something everyone can do.

Start by creating a plan, whether that means evacuating or safely sheltering at home. An evacuation plan should include where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and where you’ll stay. If you plan to remain at home, be ready to live without power, water, gas, or internet for several days by gathering essential supplies in advance.

It’s also important to stay informed. Sign up for free local emergency alerts to receive critical updates, including evacuation notices. Download the Red Cross Emergency App for real-time weather alerts, shelter locations, and expert safety guidance—available in both English and Spanish.

How You Can Help

Every day, people turn to the Red Cross during some of the most difficult moments in their lives. Because disasters are happening more frequently, the need for volunteers has never been greater.

There are several ways to get involved:

  • Disaster Action Team (DAT): Respond to local emergencies like home fires, providing comfort, financial assistance, and support to families beginning their recovery.
  • Shelter Volunteers: Help ensure evacuees have a safe place to stay and access to essential services.
  • Disaster Health and Mental Health Services: Licensed professionals can use their skills to care for individuals in shelters and connect them with ongoing support.

The Red Cross is proud that its volunteers reflect the diversity of the communities they serve—welcoming people of all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
