The American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region joined community leaders, supporters and residents in celebrating the unveiling of a statue of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, in its permanent home at Southmore Park in the City of Pasadena.

The historic dedication honors Barton’s remarkable legacy of compassion, service and humanitarian leadership. Known as the founder of the American Red Cross, Barton devoted her life to helping those affected by disasters, conflict and hardship, creating a mission that continues to impact communities across the nation more than a century later.

“This unveiling honors Clara Barton’s enduring legacy and her profound connection to Pasadena and the surrounding community,” said Carmen Watkins, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region. “More than a century ago, Clara Barton and the Red Cross responded to the devastating 1900 Galveston Hurricane, helping families recover, rebuild, and begin their lives anew. More than a century later, her vision lives on through every volunteer, donor, and supporter who helps the Red Cross bring hope, help, and healing to people facing their darkest moments.”

A particularly meaningful connection between Clara Barton and the City of Pasadena dates back to the aftermath of the devastating 1900 Galveston Hurricane. Following the storm, Barton and the American Red Cross provided critical relief and recovery assistance to communities across the Gulf Coast. Among those efforts was the distribution of 1.5 million strawberry plants to local residents, helping families rebuild their livelihoods and revitalize the area’s agricultural economy.

The statue’s permanent placement in Southmore Park serves as a lasting tribute not only to Clara Barton’s humanitarian leadership, but also to her unique connection to Pasadena and the role the American Red Cross played in helping the community recover and rebuild following one of the nation’s most devastating natural disasters.

“As we honor Clara Barton’s legacy, we are reminded that her work continues through each volunteer, donor and supporter who chooses to serve others,” said Lance, Boll, Houston Red Cross chapter board chair. “The best way to honor her legacy is to continue it.”

The American Red Cross encourages community members to carry forward Barton’s spirit of service by becoming a volunteer. To learn more about volunteer opportunities and ways to support the mission, visit redcross.org/Texas.
