The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a humanitarian as a person promoting human welfare. A humanitarian is able to look beyond themselves and contribute to something greater:

the well-being of her fellow human beings. To be a humanitarian takes compassion, courage, and charity. Humanitarians do not sit on the sidelines when they see others suffering; they act no matter what the circumstances may be.

Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, did just that. Long before creating the organization, Barton embodied the humanitarian spirit. She served others as a teacher, and later as a nurse bringing supplies to soldiers during the American Civil War. She even founded a government office to locate missing soldiers.

As a humanitarian, Clara Barton dedicated her life to the welfare of others. The culmination of her humanitarian work began in 1881 when she officially founded the American Red Cross after becoming acquainted with the European Red Cross movement. She continued to serve as president of the organization for another 21 years.

Today, the American Red Cross carries on the humanitarian legacy of Clara Barton in the United States. Its mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found brings together thousands of people across the United States. Employees, volunteers, and donors collaborate daily in a great humanitarian effort.

The organization’s humanitarian action is not limited to a single focus; its impact spans several different areas. The Red Cross helps those affected by disasters by providing shelter, food, and other necessities. It trains people in life-saving skills like CPR. It supports veterans, active-duty military, and their families. It also collects blood donations and supplies roughly 40% of the blood in the United States. Furthermore, the Red Cross works internationally to provide humanitarian aid as part of an even larger global movement that alleviates human suffering around the world.

The Red Cross actively recruits humanitarians to support its work. Those who are motivated to join the mission and carry out Clara Barton’s vision can contribute by donating or volunteering. The Red Cross accepts volunteers from all walks of life and needs a variety of talents to support its goals. Aspiring humanitarians can do everything from setting up shelters after a disaster to recruiting volunteers or distributing supplies to those in need. The organization provides training to its volunteers, and there is something for everyone to do.
