Gene McDavid, a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 70 years and former board member, passed away on July 13, 2018.
Gene’s Red Cross career started in the mid-1940s. As an active Red Cross Club member he did everything from handing out blankets after a flood, to raising money to help buy supplies and equipment for his chapter. When he moved to Houston in 1958, Gene brought his experience and passion for civic engagement to the Houston Red Cross as a board member. He was a tireless advocate of the Red Cross and served as a strong, forward-thinking leader.
“He was the kind of guy anyone would want to have on their board,” said John McDivitt former Chief Executive Officer for the Texas Gulf Coast American Red Cross. “The organization was absolutely blessed to have his leadership.”
Understanding the need for growth, Gene spearheaded the Capital Campaign which raised more than six million dollars to build the current Houston chapter office as well as the Disaster Command Center behind it. Gene served the board in many capacities, eventually becoming the Chapter Chairman. His commitment and dedication awarded him an invitation to serve on the national board. He once said the most satisfying part of his Red Cross career was his service on the national Board of Governors. He became vice-chairman of the 50-member board, and served as chairman of six different committees of the board, including the fund-raising committee.
Through the years he attained many honors, including the prestigious Clara Barton award and last year recognition for 70 years of service to the American Red Cross.
