The Hamill Foundation, created in 1969 by Mr. and Mrs. Claud B. Hamill, has been a firm supporter of the American Red Cross for more than 10 years. The Foundation has never failed to provide needed assistance to various Red Cross programs, initiatives and service groups like Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) and of course Disaster.
In 2016 the state of Texas experienced five devastating flooding and tornado disasters. The following year, Hurricane Harvey left a trail of destruction along the entire Texas Gulf Coast. Through it all, the Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) was a symbol of help and hope to those in need. When the foundation was presented with an opportunity to fund a Next Generation ERV they did not hesitate.
“Over the years, the American Red Cross, Greater Houston Area, has come to symbolize disaster relief in times of hurricanes, tornadoes, or flooding. Additionally, the work they do with aid to military families, as one of their core programs, is admirable,” said Tom Brown, Grants Director of The Hamill Foundation. “The Hamill Foundation is proud to financially support Red Cross efforts for over ten years. The Next Generation Emergency Response Vehicles is a natural next step to provide the latest and best equipment for them to help our neighbors in the Houston community.”
Communities like Orange, Beaumont, Houston, Corpus Christi, and South Texas will have a new ERV strategically located within the region and will be better able to quickly and efficiently mobilize, delivering the compassionate and effective relief that disaster survivors depend on and deserve.
2017 was marked with record-breaking disasters that changed lives forever, and the Red Cross was there to provide more comfort and support to more people when they needed it most. It is more important than ever to ensure we can be in the right place at the right time with the right resources. Red Cross ERVs are the backbone of the disaster relief delivery system. They are instrumental in almost every phase of disaster response—from prepositioning people, cots and blankets before a hurricane strikes, or distributing food and drinks following a tornado to providing a safe space for a Red Cross worker to meet with a family whose home was destroyed by a fire.
“We are grateful the Hamill Foundation chose to honor us with such a transformational gift,” said Henry Van de Putte, Regional Chief Executive for the American Red Cross, Texas Gulf Coast. “Emergency Response Vehicles are vital to our readiness and response efforts and it will make a significant impact in the Texas Gulf Coast Region, enhancing the Red Cross mission delivery and providing greater versatility and efficiency for the organization.”
