As temperatures continue to change from hot to cold, we instinctively reach for our warm jackets, scarves, boots and gloves. However, what protection do we give to our four-legged friends? Just like us, pets are also subject to the various hazards that winter weather presents.

Looking for ways to ensure your furry family members stay warm, safe and cozy this season? Check the list below for key tips to minimize the effects of freezing temperatures:

  1. Shorter potty breaks – We know how much our pets enjoy long strolls around the neighborhood. During winter, limit their outdoor exposure, as the cold weather can be detrimental to their health (especially for seniors or short-haired dogs).
  2. Bundle them up – This season presents cold rain, wind, hail, snow and more! Your pet’s time outside can be much more comfortable with a set of booties, a sweater or a coat during inclement weather.
  3. Check their paws, skin and coat – Ice, salt and other irritants can transfer to their paws. When they come back inside, wipe down their paws, check their fur and their skin for dry or rough patches.
  4. Watch those space heaters – Make sure your space heaters are pet-friendly, not directly by their bedding and cords are kept out of reach from pets.
  5. Ensure warm resting areas – Speaking of bedding, how is your pet’s resting area? Consider throwing in a blanket and moving their beds away from drafts to keep them from shivering throughout the night!
  6. Don’t leave them unattended – Just as high temperatures present deadly consequences for pets left outside or unattended in cars for even short periods of time, winter does as well. Keep an eye on them and bring them in at the first sign of discomfort.
  7. Access to fresh water – Some pups (we’re looking at you, huskies!) look forward to cold weather all year. If you plan on letting them outside, keep a bowl of fresh water and check it throughout the day to make sure it is full and not frozen!
  8. Know the signs of hypothermia – If your pet comes in shivering, check for pale gums or signs of weakness and lethargy. If so, its time to warm them up and consult with their vet to make sure everything is fine.
  9. Lock up toxic items – Certain chemicals, including de-icers and antifreeze, can be deadly. Make sure they are secured and out of reach of pets and children!
  10. Occupy their time – The winter blues can get your pets down as routines change. Try to maintain a safe routine for your pet, including short walks, heated car rides, yummy treats and plenty of cuddles to keep them happy.
