For high school student Maria Tico, service began during one of the hardest moments of her life. In her sophomore year, her grandmother became seriously ill and passed away. That loss pushed her to look for ways to support others who might feel alone, and it led her to the American Red Cross.

Maria learned about Red Cross Clubs and by the end of her sophomore year she had founded one at her school. She also became part of the international HOSA community, greeting students from around the world as a Red Cross representative.

She began focusing her club’s efforts on local nursing homes, organizing visits and building relationships with residents. Over the past two years, her club has planned talent shows, bingo games, decorating activities, and simple conversations that bring joy and connection.

That work now supports a new chapter of the Adopt-A-Center Initiative which invites Red Cross Clubs to partner with local nursing homes, pantries, and other community organizations. Many of these locations serve seniors every day and may serve as shelters during disasters, which means support from volunteers can be especially meaningful.

For Maria, the Initiative shows how powerful young people can be.

“As high school students we do not always think we have the power to help others,” she said. “But we do. People in nursing homes appreciate every visitor. They have so much personality to share.”

Maria and her team work directly with volunteer coordinators and staff to make sure they are offering support that residents truly want, from music and art shows to rediscovering old hobbies. The response has been enthusiastic and personal, with many residents sharing how much it means to have passionate volunteers show up just for them.

Adopt-A-Center is growing, and Maria hopes more students will join in. “We are just getting started,” she said. “They should try it out. You never know what is waiting for you. Keep an open mind and try it.”
