For Olubunmi “Bunmi” Bolumole, volunteer service with the American Red Cross (ARC)
began during an unforgettable moment. “I started with them last year precisely on the day of the
Microsoft Glitch during the Beryl disaster DRO,” she shared. She was originally scheduled to
serve as an Ambassador for Red Cross volunteers flying into town, but when those plans
changed, she reported to the Houston HQ DRO office and was given a new assignment—one
that would ultimately shape her Red Cross journey.
It was there that she met Debbie Grafston in the staff dietary department who
immediately recognized her enthusiasm and talent. As Bunmi recalls, Debbie told her, “girl
you’ve got skills, I will love you to work with us in the Volunteer Services Appreciation team,”
and she has been part of that team ever since.“She [Debbie] not only mentored me, she sold
the American Red Cross to me and got me fully on board,” Bunmi explained. Shortly after, she
was introduced to Debbie Wrenn, who encouraged Bunmi to keep exploring until she found the
perfect fit, reminding her that “there’s a plethora of services the ARC renders to the community.”
Bunmi fondly describes forming her “initial friendship bond with these two people,” who helped
her navigate and discover her place within the organization.
Since then, Bunmi has immersed herself in service: “Thus far, it’s been wonderful
serving with the RC; I have made new friends, learnt some new skills and also tended to
members of the community and still counting,” she said. Today, she serves across different
departments and embraces each role with enthusiasm. “I serve in different departments and I
am loving every bit of it.” Through her work, she has strengthened new skills, supported
community members during challenging moments, and found joy in working alongside other
dedicated volunteers.
Reflecting on her journey, Bunmi expresses deep appreciation for the organization and
the people she serves alongside. “Thank you ARC for what you do for our great nation USA and
thank you fellow redcrossers for making yourselves available. I am honored to serve alongside
these wonderful people.”
Evidently, for Bunmi volunteerism is not just an activity—it’s a source of purpose,
connection, and pride. Thank you for all you do!
