On Thursday, March 25, 2025, historic rainfall led to severe flooding in La Estancia, an apartment complex in Sebastian, Texas. The unprecedented rainfall left residents stranded, unable to leave their homes due to rising water levels.
The flooding created numerous challenges for the residents, the most pressing being the inability to access necessary supplies, including food. A food distribution had been planned in Sebastian, but high-water levels prevented residents from reaching the designated location.
Amidst the chaos, Willacy County Constable Jose Alberto Garza, Pct. 4 & 7, and Deputy Oviedo demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their community. Recognizing the dire situation, they took it upon themselves to deliver hot meals directly to the stranded residents. Garza emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “We need to make every effort to provide to all residents within our community.”
The Red Cross also played a vital role in the relief efforts. Miriam Garcia, a new Red Cross volunteer, decided to assist in the endeavor. Despite being new to the organization, Garcia showed remarkable dedication by getting her feet wet—literally—to help deliver food to those in need.
