On Thursday afternoon, two good friends, Jackie Graves and Marie Omann were heading to the airport from McAllen to Harlingen when their plans were abruptly changed. Jackie drove into a severe thunderstorm in Harlingen, Texas. On Thursday, March 27, Harlingen was inundated with flooding all around the area. Harlingen, Texas received over 18 inches of rain, a historic event that had not occurred since 1935. Not knowing what else to do Jackie drove into the nearest hardware store to seek refuge out of the flood waters. With no other recourse, both ladies spent the night in the parking lot until they were rescued by City of Harlingen.
Jackie and Marie spent the next night at the Harlingen Convention Center where the American Red Cross had set up a shelter. While there, the ladies were provided with a place out of the rain and flooding, comfort kits, blankets and meals for their duration.
On Saturday morning, Jackie and Marie headed back to McAllen in high hopes that Marie will be able to fly back home to Minnesota on Tuesday morning.
When the ladies were asked about their thoughts about the American Red Cross, they quickly smiled. Marie stated, “I’ve heard a lot of things about the American Red Cross but now I see their mission. I am thankful that we were well taken care of.”
Jackie said, “The American Red Cross is truly a great organization and my thoughts about them have definitely changed to a positive note. Thank you!”
