September 21st is the International Day of Peace (IDP) observed annually. It is a day dedicated to fostering peace and ceasefires across the world. This day provides another opportunity to reflect on the importance of peace, assess the work being done to cultivate peace, and to inspire initiatives that can create and maintain peace.

The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors, partners, is always there in times of need and we continue to uphold our principles of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary services, Unity and Universality. As the official volunteer humanitarian organization, we are at the forefront of responding to all kinds of crises. The Red Cross is not just about bandages and blood donations, it’s about building a foundation for peace by addressing the basic needs of people, reducing vulnerabilities, and promoting a culture of compassion and cooperation. Our work is a vivid manifestation of the ideals celebrated on International Day of Peace.

While the International Day of Peace is a global call to action, organizations like the American Red Cross are the boots on the ground, turning the ideals of peace into reality. The International Day of Peace is a crucial global observance that serves several important purposes:

  • Global Unity and Solidarity: It promotes a sense of global unity and solidarity, emphasizing the shared desire for peace across cultures, nations, and backgrounds.
  • Ceasefire and Non-Violence: The day is dedicated to observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire, offering a moment of respite from conflict and violence.
  • Awareness and Education: It raises awareness about the importance of peace, conflict resolution, and the devastating impact of war. It also serves as an opportunity to educate people about peacebuilding efforts.
  • Inspiring Action: The day inspires individuals, communities, and governments to take concrete actions towards creating a more peaceful world. It encourages dialogue, cooperation, and initiatives to address the root causes of conflict.
  • Celebrating Peace Achievements: The International Day of Peace is a chance to recognize and celebrate the achievements made in peacebuilding and conflict resolution around the globe. It highlights the progress made and motivates further efforts.

The Red Cross significantly contributes to fostering peace and stability by addressing the root causes of conflict through humanitarian and disaster relief, building resilient communities through its preparedness programs and education, promotion of humanitarian diplomacy and international cooperation and providing essential health and wellness services.

As we celebrate the International Day of Peace this year, let us reflect on this quote by Albert Einstein – “Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be achieved by understanding” and continue to choose peace over conflict to maintain a stable environment where peace can flourish.

Each year, disasters and crises devastate millions of people. As part of the world’s largest humanitarian network, Red Cross Red Crescent teams provide relief and hope in nearly every corner of the globe. Volunteers often come from the communities they serve, making us powerful change-makers. Together, Red Cross Red Crescent teams not only respond to emergencies—such as earthquakes, droughts, and health epidemics—but also help neighborhoods prepare for future disasters and ensure that children receive the vaccines they need to stay healthy.
