The American Red Cross continues to monitor the situation as the rain and flooding continues across the state of Texas. Currently the Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross is supporting 23 clients and 10 dogs across three shelter locations.

“Our team continues to interface with local communities working together to respond to those families who need support as the flooding continues to change course and impact additional families,” said Jake Peters, Texas Gulf Coast Regional Disaster Officer. “I love that our teams are not only taking care of people but also their four-legged friends too. Many people won’t evacuate when called to because they don’t want to leave their pets. The Red Cross has acknowledged that and encourages you to bring them with you to our pet friendly shelters.”

Our teams continue to work to make sure everyone has a safe place to stay, food to eat and emotional support for those affected, if needed. The Red Cross and partners remain committed to supporting communities in this time and as the full scope of this event comes to light and will continue to pivot sheltering needs as the rivers rise and go down across the areas.

Currently the below shelters are open. We will continue to work with local authorities and pivot locations as the need arises.

Anyone who plans to stay in a Red Cross shelter should bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items. They should also include any special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, and durable medical equipment and/or assistive technology if applicable. While Red Cross can provide medical equipment and/or assistive technology loaners, it may take a little time depending on inventory on hand and availability of delivery systems to get them to the shelter.
