One hundred and twenty years ago today, on the soft wind-swept dunes of Kill Devil Hills outside of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, two men realized a dream. Although it was a private fascination that drove them, their passion for discovery would eventually make every man and woman’s world bigger. Today, on Wright Brother’s Day, we can think about the places we have seen and will see, the family and friends in far-off destinations that are only a flight away. We can appreciate the power of determination and the fearlessness that propels some to achieve unthinkable feats. And we can do all this with a simple glance towards the sky.
With the holidays upon us and travel at its peak, The Red Cross would like to take a moment to salute the Wright Brother’s contribution to the season’s togetherness while offering some reminders that may aid in keeping the season both merry and bright.
Last year, over 113 million travelers took to the skies, and this holiday season will likely be no different. If you are one of the many flying, please keep in mind that it is flu season. Should you be visiting older adults, remember they are at higher risk of getting very sick. Fortunately, taking some simple precautions can go a long way.
Consider bringing your own pillows and blankets for the flight. They can serve as a shield against the seat. Handling your own belongings and washing your hands often can help minimize the spread of germs. Keep in mind a person could be contagious for a week before symptoms appear.
With winter weather and unfamiliar destinations can come unexpected hazards. The Red Cross Emergency App provides instant access to winter storm tips and weather alerts. You can customize 40 different severe weather alerts to help keep you and your loved ones safe. Additionally, the First Aid App includes expert medical guidance and a hospital locator in case travelers encounter any mishaps. Both apps are available to download for free in app stores or at redcross.org/apps
If you are traveling somewhere that will experience winter weather, you can visit the Red Cross ahead of time for tips on winter weather safety.
Should your travel plans include a furry friend, here are some tips for safe air travel with a pet.
Lastly, if the spirit of the season moves you to help in other ways, you can donate airline miles to the Red Cross. Miles can be used by volunteers traveling to fulfill the Red Cross mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies.
During this season for giving remember that it only took two brothers 12 seconds and 120 feet to change the course of human history. But before that, before the adrenaline and nerves, before the grit and long hours, before the first leap of faith was ever made, it all started with a capacity for something we all share. Heart. Happy Holidays and Happy Wright Brother’s Day from The Red Cross.
