World humanitarian day is a day internationally dedicated towards recognizing the sacrifices of humanitarian people and those who have died for humanitarian causes.

Twenty-two humanitarian aid workers were killed in a bomb attack at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad Iraq on the 19th of August 2003. The United Nation in 2008 adopted a resolution designating August 19th as World humanitarian day. World humanitarian day has been observed yearly since the August 19, 2009. This year the hashtag #NoMatterWhat# aims to reaffirm the commitment to humanitarian values while standing together with the communities that we support, no matter who, no matter where, no matter what and would mark the 20th anniversary since the bombing at the Canal hotel in Baghdad.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A HUMANITARIAN. A humanitarian is dedicated to helping improve the lives of people that have been affected by disasters and crisis, most times with huge sacrifice or risk. The American Red cross is a humanitarian organization, as it embodies these principles, and works tirelessly to support the vulnerable.

The countless stories of Red Cross volunteers and donors is a testament to the Red Cross’s obligation to humanitarianism. From supporting patients desperately in need of medical care in Nigeria, helping children gain access to education in Ukraine, assisting victims recently devastated by floods in Texas, or comforting residents displaced by the Hawaii wildfires, the organisation is constantly working to improve the lives of communities affected by disaster. They take risks every day to stand with and support vulnerable communities, no matter what.

The war in Ukraine and its impact on global food supply has increased humanitarian needs while also putting a strain on the mechanisms to support other humanitarian efforts. Millions of people will need humanitarian aid this year.

The Red Cross relies on the courage, sacrifice and empathy of the people that donate and volunteer when communities become vulnerable due to the devastating crisis. The need to protect these heroes that might face threats to their lives, injury, kidnapping, and arrest is a reality that cannot be ignored.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE In the words of Nelson Mandela, “It is in your hands, to make a better world for all who live in it.” This statement resonates with the efforts of humanitarians sometimes sacrificing everything to make the world a better place. The Red Cross contributes by helping people that are affected by disasters, providing access to life saving blood and blood products, and provides support to the armed services. It works tirelessly through its mission to make the world a better place.

Do you want to contribute to making the world a better place? If you do, then you embody the spirit of humanitarianism. Join the Red Cross, together we can help alleviate the suffering of people, families, and communities in the face of emergencies.
